Today’s Encouragement is, “And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 NLT
Name Him Jesus –
These are the words of an angel of the Lord, spoken to Joseph, the man engaged to Mary (v 20).
In the culture of the day, a name carried great significance, reflecting parents’ hopes for that person’s future character. It wasn’t chosen because it was a ‘popular’ name of the time. God deliberately selected it for His deeply loved Son, whom He was bringing into the world.
The Hebrew word Yeshua is translated into Greek and English as Jesus, and it literally means, “the Lord saves.” That’s why the angel emphasized, “for he will save his people from their sins.”
The Father could have chosen any name, but He chose “Yeshua.” He did not name His Son: “the Lord Judges,” “the Lord is Holy,” or “the Lord is powerful,” or any other aspect of God’s nature. He wanted to make clear that He Saves!
“God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:17
Jesus Himself said, “For I have come to save the world and not to judge it.” John 12:47b
Father God, You know that we all need to be saved, and we acknowledge this also. Thank You for sending us the Savior, Jesus. He alone is the One who saves us all.
