He Renews My Strength –
Truths That Transform: God gives new strength to His people.
Now why would our strength need to be renewed? Only because it’s been exhausted, used up, and drained.
When we feel defeated, we are hurting. Our soul is weak, tired, and defeated, and then the Lord refreshes our soul, renews our strength, and only He can.
The NIV reads: “he refreshes my soul.”
We only need refreshing and renewal when we are down, defeated, hurting, or in despair.
Remember that David wrote this Psalm. The shepherd boy who became a lion slayer, giant-slayer, warrior, and man after God’s own heart. If this powerful man needed refreshing and restoring, certainly we can admit that we do too! And there is only one Source of restoration and refreshment for our exhausted souls.
Centuries after David, Isaiah wrote, “But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength.” (40:31 NLT). There are many other references to this renewing, restoring, and refreshing work of God in our lives. We may try other methods, but only He can renew us. In truth, He makes us new. “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT)
Thank You, Father, for knowing our every need, providing strength, restoration, renewal, and refreshment for our souls, our deepest need. Help us to turn to You alone when we need strength and restoration.
