Today’s Encouragement is, “Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. No one was sorry when he died. They buried him in the City of David, but not in the royal cemetery.” 2 Chronicles 21:20 NLT
No One Was Sorry –
What a life he lived. Married to a daughter of Ahab (v6), which explains a lot; he killed all his brothers (v4) and a few more princes just for good measure when he became king. He led Israel into whoredom (v13). Elijah prophesied (v 15) the horrible way he would suffer for two long years (v 19) until his death.
And no one was sorry when he died.
Here’s a tragic example of a life lived for self. There was never any repentance from Jehoram, no remorse, and never a recorded moment when he acknowledged God in any way.
The Encouragement? Just as there are many examples of godly people in the Bible, there are examples of godless people. Honest self-evaluation, in the full light of God’s amazing grace, leads us to repentance and a restored, renewed relationship, a rebirth with God. He is always ready; only waiting for us to turn to Him.
Many will not; they refuse to ask God to save them. And for those who do… no one is sorry when they die.
Father, thank You for choosing to save us from ourselves, from living for ourselves only. As Your people, believers in Jesus, may we live lives that honor You. First, because it is right, and also because You bless those who walk in Your ways. So that those who also love You will be sorry when we die, but grateful that we have gone into Your presence!
