Today’s Encouragement is, “When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the LORD. Abel also brought a gift, the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The LORD accepted Abel and his gift, but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected.” Genesis 4:3-7 NLT
The Best Portions-
We can clearly see the difference in the attitude towards God between Cain and Abel. This is the first mention of any offering in the Bible, and it presents an important truth.
Cain presented some of his crops. Abel brought the best of his firstborn lambs. Some vs. Best. We aren’t told how, but God somehow accepted Abel’s gift; Cain’s gift was rejected. The nature of their gifts revealed the nature of their hearts.
Later, the Bible teaches the concept of the first-fruits: the principle is that we present, give, and surrender to God the first of our efforts, crops, or livestock on that day, as well as our earnings in today’s economy.
By giving back to Him the first portion, we honor Him as the source of all we have. We would not be able to earn this money or reap this harvest without His strength and blessings. So this acknowledgment of His blessing, our gifts to Him, is our way of thanking Him, an offering of gratitude.
Cain gave an offering, but it was ordinary, just ‘some’ of his harvest. Abel’s acceptable offering stemmed from his love and respect for God. He gave the best of his firstborn.
Father, help us to honor You and express our gratitude for all You do for us by offering You the best of ourselves, our lives, and our blessings. You are so good to us; help us respond appropriately to You.
