Today’s Encouragement is, “They replied, ‘We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?’ Jesus told them, ‘This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.’”John 6:28-29 NLT
The Only Work God Wants –
As we grow in our faith, we begin to desire more. We want to be used by God, to be useful to Him. We want to please Him, not because we fear His anger, but because we sincerely love Him. We want to express our gratitude to Him. These are all pure emotions; He initiates the desires of the hearts of His people. “Take delight in the LORD, and He will give you your heart’s desires.” (Psalm 37:4 NLT)
So these sincere people asked Jesus the question we all want answered: “What should we do?”
Jesus could have recited the Ten Commandments or responded with the new commandment: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself” (Matt 22:39). But He didn’t. He didn’t ‘miss an opportunity’ to remind them of God’s laws; instead, He clarified the essential work that God wants from His people: “Believe in the one He has sent.”
Believe? That’s it? Did Jesus drop the ball? Surely this was an opportunity to preach about living a godly life, loving others, sharing the good news, and all the other “works” we think are essential duties of believers.
He didn’t add a list. He didn’t say, “First you must believe and then you must…”
Jesus has done everything for us! He came to fulfill all the requirements of the law (Matthew 5:17). We simply believe in Him as the Son of God.
Thank You, loving Father, for allowing us the immeasurable privilege of eternal life, only by believing in Jesus. We believe!
