Today’s Engagement is, “So David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. Soon his brothers and all his other relatives joined him there. Then others began coming-men who were in trouble or in debt or who were just discontented-until David was the captain of about 400 men.” 1 Samuel 22:1-2 NLT
Others Began Coming –
Here is David, anointed to be king as a boy, the giant-slayer, head of Saul’s army, the king’s son-in-law, now a wanted man because of the jealousy of the mad king Saul.
He is on the run, hiding from anyone who might turn him in to the king, and probably be richly rewarded! And these types of men began coming to join David; they were in trouble, in debt, or just discontent. What a messy bunch! These men come to join him and his family (who were also ostracized), hiding in a cave.
Not exactly a great way to kick off a new kingdom, is it?
Remind you of anyone?
Jesus, born in a tiny little village, in a barn, surrounded and celebrated by a few sheep, mom and dad, and some shepherds who were raving about a choir of angels!
God likes small beginnings. He doesn’t need the pomp and circumstance of a grand ceremony and famous, powerful people!
He deals with you and me the same way. Quietly. He affirms us with a few kind words from a brother or sister, He brings His Word to life with a memorized verse, He reassures us of His love for us with an unexpected ‘little’ blessing.
Thank you, Father, that You use ordinary people for Your extraordinary purposes. Help us to also come, join, and follow You in every way!
Nothing Else
