Today’s Encouragement is 1 Samuel 21:12-13 And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath. [13] So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard.
David – was much afraid –
David was running from King Saul, who had attempted several times to kill him. In his fear, David lied to the priest, Ahimelech, and if that wasn’t enough, he then feigned insanity before Achish, king of Gath. His deception resulted in the murder of the priest Ahimelech and 84 other priests and all the women and children of the city of Nob, at the command of King Saul. Later, David even acknowledged his responsibility for this horrible tragedy (see 22:22).
Ok, so how is this encouraging?
We know that David committed a great sin with Bathsheba, another man’s wife, then had that man murdered, and these previous sinful acts, this one in great fear, as well… and yet still, David was a man after God’s own heart! (Acts 13:22)
Why? Because he was repentant. He continued to love and honor God, he always returned to God. Also, most all of the Kings turned to idol worship, especially in their later years, including Solomon! … but not David. He was a sinner as we all are, yet he remained faithful to God.
Lord God help us to realize that You are merciful, that we can always return to You, repent, and receive new mercy. Help us to repent and to return, for You have provided Your abundant Grace for each of us who believe.
