Like A Weaned Child

Today’s Encouragement is, “LORD, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don’t concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp. Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, put your hope in the LORD— now and always.” Psalm 131:1-3 NLT

Like a Weaned Child –

A nursing child comes to its mother for one reason: to be fed. Nothing else registers beyond that need. A weaned child is different. The child no longer cries for milk, but stays close for the relationship itself: comfort, reassurance, and protection.

That is the picture the psalmist paints of his own soul. He is not striving or demanding. He has calmed and quieted himself, and he rests with God for who He is, not only for what He gives.

The things too great and too marvelous for him did not disappear. He simply stopped focusing on them. When this world becomes too much for us (as it often does!), we can choose to let go, lay down what is beyond us, and rest in the loving arms of our Father, hoping in the LORD now and always (v3).

Father, thank You for holding all the matters too great for me. Help me to calm and quiet my soul and to rest with You, not only to ask of You. I place my worries and my entire life in Your hands, and I choose to hope in You today and tomorrow. I pray in Jesus’ name.
