I Am Godly

Today’s Encouragement is, “Incline your ear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Preserve my life, for I am godly; save your servant, who trusts in you-you are my God.” Psalm 86:1-2 ESV

I Am Godly –

We all recoil against pride. It is an ugly, evil beast that destroys those who adopt it and all those around them. David isn’t prideful in this statement; rather, he admits his need for God and his desire for God to act and help him. All the balance of this psalm is spent asking God to act, not proclaiming any goodness in David.

The word translated ‘godly’ is also ‘faithful’, ‘kind’, ‘holy one’, and even ‘saint’ and ‘pious’. The terms ‘saint’ and ‘pious’ usually bring up images of prideful people strutting around with noses in the air. But instead, a godly person is one focused on Him, one who is striving to be Christ-like, one who is demonstrating kindness, faithfulness, and love to others because of God’s love within them.

We are (already) godly! You trust Him, you want to honor Him with your life, you love Him (as best we understand love), you want to please Him, to know Him more, and to grow as a Christian.
Not a prideful nose-in-the-air claim, but rather a description of one who is honestly seeking a real and growing relationship with God.

Father God, so that others see Jesus in us, help us to live godly lives, unafraid of bearing Your name, being Your salt and light to the people around us.
