Rest

Today’s Encouragement is, “Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.’” Matthew 11:28-29 NLT

Rest –

Jesus promised to give us rest. He offered to teach us to find rest. And He speaks of a soul-rest. This isn’t a power nap! The rest He gives us and teaches us is for our deepest need, our soul.

We are too often driven by life. Work, family, chores, goals, hobbies- we often don’t even stop to breathe! We fall into bed late and get up early to try to “keep up.” We allow life to run us ragged.

Is it possible that such a life is exactly what our enemy wants? We become so exhausted in doing that we forget our need to rest, even seeing it as wasteful, lazy, and unnecessary. Or the alternative extreme, we give up on life, withdraw into fear, addictions, or depression.

We aren’t destined to live in such extremes. The enemy loves it, but our Father has a better plan. His Rest.

In Philippians 4:6-7, we’re advised to “Pray about everything.” “Thank Him.” “You will experience God’s Peace.”

He will carry every task, responsibility, problem, or concern. Pray about everything and trust Him to guide, arrange, and handle it. He alone can.

Father, help us, poor harried creatures, working ourselves to exhaustion, as if everything depended upon us. Give us Your rest, teach us to rest in You. You love us and care for us, and You are our Perfect Father.
