Today’s Encouragement is, “No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” Philippians 3:13-14 NLT
Press On –
Do you have a goal? We know that to accomplish things, goal setting is very helpful. A few goals I’ve set and achieved have been major milestones in my life; however, I have to admit the achievement of these goals is somewhat, if not completely, hollow. No cheering crowd. Not even a very measurable personal satisfaction. Immediately after one goal is reached, another goal must be set, and we are driven onward, or perhaps disillusionment and apathy set in. And so, we become either driven or disinterested in our human goals.
But here Paul speaks of pressing on toward the single highest goal of man, the heavenly prize.
This prize is unattainable in this life, unlike our ordinary human goals. Yet its pursuit is the only truly rewarding journey; the journey of ‘pressing on’ itself provides reward for this life. And the heavenly prize, greater than we can imagine, awaits us.
How do we ‘press on’? It is a spiritual journey, a race, so we press on in spiritual ways, by prayer, surrender, obedience, and faith. We aren’t given an easy step-by-step plan to define the how-to… but we do have a Book!
Father, help us lay aside all lesser things, all lesser goals, and our striving after earthly things, so that, with Your guidance, we will continue to press on toward the heavenly prize.
