My Food

Today’s Engagement is, “Jesus said to them, ‘My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.’” John 4:34 ESV

My Food –

Jesus said that doing God’s will, obeying Him, is the food that sustains and nourishes him both physically and spiritually.

We’ve often thought that we are fed by reading the Bible, praying, and attending church. These are all good! These are certainly doing God’s will! We can be nourished when we do so, but we can also “Do” these good things in a passive, disengaged attitude, and receive no nourishment at all!

Jesus spoke these words just after He had an extended discussion with the woman at the well. He has to be referring to that conversation as Doing the will of His Father!

We immediately jump to the conclusion that, “Oh, ok, so sharing the gospel with a stranger is God’s will and therefore is the food Jesus was alluding to.“ Yes, but let’s look a bit deeper.

Jesus and His disciples were on a journey.
They went through Samaria.
Jesus was tired and rested by the well.
The disciples all went to town to buy food.
The Samaritan woman came alone to the well.
Then Jesus spoke and opened her eyes, and revealed to her, of all people, that He was the Messiah! (John 4:26)

Now, is it possible that each of these factors was also part of what Jesus referred to as “doing the will of His Father?”

All of these things brought about this moment of revelation for a single sinful Samaritan woman. All God’s will. All food which nourished Jesus.

Thank You, Father, that You will guide us in every step of our lives to do Your Will. This is our prayer in Jesus’ Name.
