Matters Too Great

Today’s Encouragement is, “LORD, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don’t concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp.” Psalm 131:1 NLT

Matters Too Great –

This verse presents an interesting perspective of King David! As king of Israel, which was a very successful and influential nation of his day, certainly, he had many matters to be concerned about! The enemies that threatened the economy, and, as a man after God’s heart (Acts 13:22), he could be very concerned about the spiritual nature of His people, to name a few such matters.

But this great king, instead of being concerned, focused on and worried about these matters, chose to rest in God’s loving care. “Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk.” (V2a)

My friend, like David, we can choose the things we are concerned about! We can choose to focus on the news, issues at work, the decay of society, the political realm, or our sports teams, but wouldn’t those be “matters too great?”

The Serenity Prayer suggests a way to discern what we should focus our attention on, pray about, and act upon. In summary – Help me to Accept what I cannot change, Change what I can, and Know the difference.

Of course, we can pray about anything! And prayer is the greatest thing we can do about anything!!!

Father, help us to see that concerning ourselves over things we cannot change, like tomorrow or other people, that is self-destructive! Instead, help us choose to rest in Your presence, like a contented child.
