Today’s Encouragement is Colossians 4:2 NLT Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.
Devote yourselves –
What are we devoted to?
To Devote means to commit, dedicate, or focus. This is a choice we make; we choose what we devote ourselves to. Is it family, fishing, or financial gain? Is it accumulating stuff? We have so much ‘stuff’ that we rent storage buildings because our homes can’t contain all our stuff! (We have one too…)
But what is it that we are truly devoted to?
For some sadly, it is our addiction – food, fear, worry, gossip, drama, drugs, alcohol, our illnesses, lust, or self-pity the list is endless.
The wisdom of God suggests, instead of these things, that we instead choose (we still get to decide) to Devote ourselves to Prayer! With an alert mind, considering what we are praying, with wisdom, and with a thankful heart.
This is praying from our position as a beloved son or daughter of God. We begin with the truth of God as Our Father, our relationship with Him, and gratitude for Who He Is and all He has already done, and for His very great promises for us all!
Notice my friend, that anyone, rich or poor, healthy or ill, wise or slow, anyone can do this. No special skill or ability is required. Just a willing heart.
Father, please help us, for we can do nothing without You, to devote ourselves to prayer, recognizing that You can do immeasurably more than we could ever do, or ask, or even imagine. We rely on You.
