Today’s Encouragement is 1 John 1:5-6 NLT This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. [6] So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth.
God is light –
The characteristics of God are described in varying ways throughout scripture. As examples, God was ‘filled with’ compassion for Israel, God was ‘angry with’ the people of Sodom, He ‘grew weary’ of the complaining and ungrateful people that He had just delivered from slavery. These are temporary emotions God expressed.
Yet in other scripture, His inherent Nature, who He is, is defined for us clearly. 1 John 4:8 ‘God IS Love’. And here v 5, ‘God IS Light’. He displays other characteristics from time to time, yet these define for us – Who He Is!
Of course, God is not simple! He is much, much more than one or two or a dozen words can define! Here are a few more: Matt 19:17 & Mark 10:18 God is Good. John 3:33 God is True. John 4:24 God is Spirit. 1 Cor 10:12 God is faithful. Ephesians 2:4 God is rich in mercy. 1 John 1:9 God is Faithful.
These all describe Who God is, but the absolute best, the perfect description of God is Jesus Himself. John 14:10 “…Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father!…”
Father help us to live in the Light, to live in Your Light.
