Today’s Encouragement is Matthew 18:1-3 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” [2] And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them [3] and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
The greatest in the kingdom-
Imagine, the disciples had been talking about greatness, discussing who was Jesus’ favorite disciple. So they said, let’s go ask Him! Jesus might have groaned when they did, but remember He is never surprised at the depth of our foolishness, He knows us!
Yet they asked because they wanted to know, ‘what does it take, what do we need to do, to become great in Your kingdom Lord’? Inherent in this question may be, “What about me, Lord?” Will I be great in your Kingdom? Surely, they had some inkling that the Kingdom wouldn’t be an earthly one, Jesus demonstrated no signs during his ministry on earth, that He was going to ‘take over’ and become King of the earth. No, His kingdom is a spiritual one a Kingdom of the heart and spirit. Yet they still asked this curious question.
My friends, the disciples were ordinary people, like you and me. They wanted to know who was greatest. Jesus shocked them to their core… ’The humble one, like this child, is the greatest.’
Father God, help us to live humbly, to be humble, to be child-like in our faith, our trust, our hope in You.
Like a Child
