Forgiven

Today’s Encouragement is Leviticus 5:18 “He shall bring to the priest a ram without blemish out of the flock, or its equivalent, for a guilt offering, and the priest shall make atonement for him for the mistake that he made unintentionally, and he shall be forgiven.

The animal sacrifice was, among other things, a symbol of the high cost of sin. The sacrifice of the animal was an expensive issue. So much so that God allowed the poor to sacrifice doves or even flour mixed with oil if they couldn’t afford the goat, lamb, ram or bull required.

Consider for a minute… a person living under this old covenant… he’s sinned, recognized his guilt and repented and brought the sacrifice to the temple, and the priest has made atonement. As he’s walking back home after this sacrificial offering… the guilt comes pounding on the door of his mind… “You hypocritical loser! Look at the ugliness of this sin in your life! How can you honor God? How can you bear to show your face at His holy temple? Shame on you!” My friends, the accuser is brutal!

Would not this person, walking home from offering the required sacrifice, say to the enemy, and to his guilty thoughts, “ Yes I did sin, but I am now forgiven. The sacrifice has been made and the matter is closed. Atonement has been made and my guilt is removed!”

My friends, in this same way, we can counter the accusations of our enemy, of our guilty consciences, with the truth of the perfect sacrifice, once for all, of Jesus, He atonement for us is already done, perfectly and eternally completed. We need only point to the cross and say,” He died for me! And I am forgiven!”

Father God, when the accuser accuses me, as he always does, help me to respond to accusing thoughts with the truth of what Jesus has done for me. Help me to counter every accusation with Your truth!
