Without Good Works

Today’s Encouragement is, “Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.” James 2:26 NLT

Without Good Works –

We are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8). Our faith is completed (brought to full maturity) by good works (James 2:22).

We see this concept demonstrated in God’s Love. “We love each other because He loved us first” 1 John 4:19. First came God’s Love poured out to us; then came our recognition and acceptance of it, and then our love for others. We show our love for others in our works. Good works are the breath of our spiritual life.

James gives the example of giving food and clothing to someone in need as good works (v. 15-16). Later, he gives the example of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son (v. 21-22). Small or monumental, our works, deeds of faith, are the evidence of the maturity of our faith.

Good works don’t save us, but they clearly demonstrate the sincerity of our faith.

Finally, the converse of this truth is also true: good works done without faith are dead. “And it is impossible to please God without faith.” Hebrews 11:6a NLT
Good works done for recognition, pride, or guilt cannot compare to the purity of faith. “If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:3 NLT
Our good works flow out from love, by faith, to others.

Father God, help us release the amazing Love You have poured into us to the people around us so that our faith in You and Your Love is clear.
