Today’s Encouragement is, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down…” Hebrews 12:1a NLT
Surrounded By Witnesses –
My amazing father, who was 105, passed from this life to Eternity two months ago. Throughout his adult life, he cared for, loved, pastored, counseled, and served others. Among his treasures, I found a small, well-worn, taped-together notebook and a note in his handwriting dated 10:35 PM on December 31, 1942.
Eighty-two years ago, when America was at war, my fantastic father, 23, while in Army training, penned these words:
I, John Norris DeFoore, on this the last day of the year 1942, do hereby make the following resolutions – firmly resolving that I will, to the best of my ability and strength, carry out the intentions, but should I fail, I will not give up, but merely try hard to conquer the next time these – the resolutions listed below:
- In an effort to learn more about God’s teaching, read at least 5 books in the New Testament each day.
- Pray daily – for all those that need the love of God in their life.
- Talk to men about Christ in an effort to bring more men close to Him and to save lost souls.
- I will love my neighbor and be kind to my fellow man, always having the interest of these at heart.
- Remind myself constantly that as a chosen minister of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, I have a very definite duty toward humanity, my country, and the kingdom of the Master.
- I will grow in Christ so that I may become spiritually minded.
- Be my best self at all times, and when I am alone, spend much time in prayer and concentration on spiritual things.
- Be meek and humble.
- Be an example, spiritual, mental, and physical to all.
Father God, help us also to resolve, as so many have before us, to strip off every weight that slows us down and be known as Your people, Your witnesses. We pray in Jesus’ Name.
