The Sword

Today’s Encouragement is, “Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:17b NLT

The Sword –

In this battle with spiritual enemies (Ephesians 6:12), we are given perfect spiritual armor (v13-18). But only one weapon is needed… the Word of God, which is described as a spiritual sword.

Why a sword? Other weapons, like arrows, slings, and spears, existed then, but a sword was used face-to-face in close-quarters combat.  A sword can also be used defensively to block the enemy’s attacks and offensively to cut him down!

The message is clear: our battle is up close and personal. The struggle with this enemy of our souls is not like two great armies covering a vast battlefield but one enemy seeking to destroy you and me!

We respond to this personal attack of our enemy with the spiritual sword of God’s Word.

Ever notice how long years of training are always featured in sword-fighting movies? We, too, must train and become proficient with our weapon, God’s Word. And that equates to Time – reading, Faith – believing, and Confidence- trusting that His Word is our defense, offense, and victory!

Jesus countered the enemy’s attacks (described as temptations) with the Word of God. He responded to each attack, “It is written…” (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10). We also recognize that Jesus Himself is the Word of God (John 1:1); He defends us!

Encouragement? – “No weapon turned against you will succeed!” Isaiah 54:17 NLT

Father, help us learn, know, and trust your Word so we can use it to defend ourselves against the enemy and destroy his attacks. Your Word is our weapon.

My Weapon

  1. Brother Rick, I will practice “the sword of the Spirit” today. Your calls to my attention make such a difference.

Prayer request: I have a dear first cousin in central Florida. They are without power, so I am unable to check on her or her husband.🙏
