Today’s Encouragement is, “And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or property, for my sake, will receive a hundred times as much in return and will inherit eternal life.” Matthew 19:29 NLT
For My Sake –
Remember when Jesus called his disciples? They immediately left everything. Simon and Andrew left their boats and nets, including the most incredible catch of their lives… For His Sake. James and John left their fishing business and their father. Matthew left the highest-paying job in the nation immediately – for His sake.
They had not yet heard this wonderful eternal promise at the time. They simply obeyed Him and followed.
We find it highly offensive, don’t we? That Jesus would suggest we leave our family to follow Him. We can understand property and houses, but give up our family?
Our culture almost idolizes family! Yet the family is often dysfunctional, sometimes even toxic! When we lay down our lives and give up everything, family, and friends are included… because Jesus has a better way!
“Then he looked at those around him and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” Mark 3:34-35 NLT
Our family of faith is our true family. It is no more perfect than our biological family, but it is forgiven and cleansed. This is what Jesus said; it is not just a made-up, feel-good message.
Father, help choose to take Jesus at His Word – and believe, follow, and leave everything and everyone else behind for Jesus.
