Today’s Encouragement is, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5 ESV
The Light Shines –
This verse at the introduction of John’s book is an ancient statement of current and eternal Truth. Jesus IS the Light of the world! (John 8:12).
Jesus, the Light, shines in the darkness. The darkness is real; it is always present (until He ends all darkness forever). And yet, even in this terrible darkness… The Light, Jesus, shines… and the darkness is powerless to overcome His Light!
My friends, this world is truly dark… our current circumstances can seem overwhelming. Death, depression, decay, addiction, identity confusion, illnesses, and suffering seem to surround us… and this is true! Even among us believers, there is much darkness! This is the reality, the darkness which we live in…
But – there is The Light! And no darkness, no matter how black or bleak, within or without us, can overcome His Light!
Imagine with me for a moment, the darkness of Calvary. Jesus had been crucified, and the daylight became dark! All the hopes of his disciples were crushed; they hung their heads in sorrow. The greatest man they’d ever known, the hope for everyone, the one who they thought would save everyone… had been cruelly tortured and mercilessly killed by evil, by the darkness. And for three long and dark days… all hope was trampled into the dust… or so it seemed.
Three days later, and every moment since… “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Thank You, Jesus, for continuing to shine, to illuminate, and overcome all of the darkness of this world!
