Today’s Encouragement is, “Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don’t concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp. Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.” Psalm 131:1-2 “(NLT)
A weaned child –
A weaned child decides what to eat; a nursing child is nourished by what is provided by its mother. A weaned child is with its mother by choice, for comfort, for relationship, for reassurance and protection; a nursing child gives no thought to anything but its need for food.
So, a weaned child with its mother is at perfect peace, having already received all the nourishment required. The relationship is more mature, substantive, and less desperately drawing from the mother all its needs.
And this is the image of the psalm writer, who describes his own soul, at rest, in a peaceful relationship with the Father. And the cares of this life, the worries of this world, the ‘things too great or too awesome’ are set aside, pushed away, so that his soul may enjoy this rest with God.
Thank You, Father, that at any time, especially when this world becomes too much for us (as it often does!), we can choose to turn away from it, be unconcerned about all the ‘matters too great’ for us, and simply rest, peacefully, like a weaned child in Your loving arms, Father. Help us to choose to rest, to hide, in You.
