Every Thought

Today’s Encouragement is, “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV

Every Thought –

This phrase appears in Paul’s discussion of dealing with opposition to Jesus’s truth. In the previous verse, he speaks of the “weapons of our warfare.”

So, argument, opinion, and thought are destroyed, taken captive, and controlled by spiritual strength, not by our willpower or personal physical or emotional power and strength, but by the spiritual power that comes through obedience to Christ.

I must first admit that my thoughts are not always very Christian!  The thoughts that ‘appear from nowhere’ can be frighteningly bizarre!  What I “do with them” next is what matters.  The scriptural wisdom and advice is, “Take every thought captive, to obey Christ!”

So, as soon as the thought enters our minds, whatever thought it may be, we can take it captive to obey Christ!  We do nothing perfectly, of course, so this is a goal, a practice, an intention, something we pursue and work towards, never achieving nor expecting perfection.  Yet, every single time we take a thought captive to Christ, we have a great victory!

And what does it mean to Obey Christ?  What did He say?  Love God and love others as yourself.  Pretty straightforward, simple, and concise.

Is it possible that…

Every thought that is not directly or indirectly connected with the Love of God, others, or ourselves… needs to be taken captive, even destroyed.

Father God, we can do nothing without You (John 15:5); we need Your help in everything! Help us to obey You.
