Today’s Encouragement is, “Then they said to him, ‘What must we do, to be doing the works of God?’ Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’” John 6:28-29 ESV
The Work of God –
Like many people today, these people asked Jesus what they needed to Do to be Good and do God’s will. What good deeds? What list of requirements? They believed that their actions brought them into a right relationship with God.
Jesus corrected them, stating that only what we Believe, not what we Do, makes us acceptable to God.
Now, this is so critical, my friend. We are not saved because we are good people. (“No one is good except God alone.” Mark 10:18b) We can never be good enough to deserve God’s love! We can never do enough good things!
It is not what we Do… but only what we believe! And the only belief that matters is belief in Jesus, the Son of God, sent by God, who gave up His life to save us. This is the “work of God,” what we must Do to be right with God.
There is no comparison of good deeds versus bad. No counting of prayers, following laws and rules, church attendance, giving of money or time, no act or deed, no purity of thought… nothing else can save us!
Only Jesus.
Father God, help us realize and never forget this Truth: nothing we can do or say will ever save us. Only faith in Your Son Jesus is our hope, freedom, and right standing with You. Thank You for making this Way available to anyone who believes in Jesus. You are so good, so kind, and so merciful!
