Listen Carefully

Today’s Encouragement is Deuteronomy 5:1 NLT Moses called all the people of Israel together and said, “Listen carefully, Israel. Hear the decrees and regulations I am giving you today, so you may learn them and obey them!

Listen Carefully –

In Deuteronomy 5:6-21 God spells out the eternal wisdom of life, called the ten commandments. Many of us recoil at the word, “commandment”.  Our fierce, often foolish independence (from God? Really?) makes us respond… “Nobody is gonna tell Me what to do!”

But consider, was God merely setting up some laws for us to obey to be good enough for Him?  Or – Is it possible that … God lovingly gave us His eternal and perfect wisdom for life, condensed into these 10 clear instructions?

To illustrate, verse 21 is Don’t Covet.  Coveting is lusting after anything… “I just gotta have… that person, that thing, that job, career, house, car…” whatever it is that sets off this ‘lust for more’ in your life…  Lusting only makes us miserable!  It makes us focus intently on what we Don’t have, and completely dissatisfied with what we Do have!  And my friend, that’s a lousy way to live, by any standards!

The same applies to each of the other commands.  “Don’t murder, commit adultery, steal, or lie”.  These things bring Death, not Life!

Most importantly, this eternal wisdom begins with… recognizing that God is God!  Don’t mistake some created image for Your Creator. Honor My name too.  This recognition and acceptance will help you have a wise and positive perspective on life.

Father, we are grateful.  Thank You for such wisdom, and for the Grace and Forgiveness which You provide us through Christ when we do not follow Your wisdom.

The Perfect Wisdom of Our God
