Today’s Encouragement is Psalm 111:10 ESV The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!
Fear of the Lord –
We need to have an understanding (limited as it might be) of who God is… all-powerful, great and mighty, creator of all… He is the most awesome being that exists! He holds time and space in His hand; has no beginning and no end. All attempts to describe Him are terribly inadequate because – He is Indescribable.
And He is perfectly Holy! Anything imperfect cannot come into His presence! The imperfect would be burned up, or just disappear into dust in His presence… we would have no hope of ever being close to Him… except for Jesus. Only Jesus is perfect. And Jesus brings us, as His people, before God, and we then become adopted as His sons and daughters.
So, fear of God is recognizing His greatness and majesty… but it isn’t the whole story… that’s why it is the ‘beginning’ – only the start – of true wisdom… One who doesn’t fear God cannot be truly wise.
Next, notice the terminology… those who ‘practice’ it, the fear of the Lord… have a good understanding. How do we practice the fear of the Lord? Not by cringing at the thought of Him, not by running from Him, nor avoiding Him, not by dreading being around Him. But by recognizing the Power and Glory of God. Standing in Awe of Him. Acknowledging His Greatness. This is practicing the Fear of the Lord.
And this is the beginning of wisdom.
Father God, we admit we don’t know how to honor You properly. Help us to learn to practice the Fear of the Lord, in order to show You proper Respect and Honor. To come to acknowledge that You alone are Holy.
You Alone are Holy
