Today’s Encouragement is Colossians 4:6 ESV “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”
Seasoned with Salt –
Salt was then, still is, the primary seasoning for our food, just the right amount makes everything taste better! And in this same way we are wise to season our speech! Adding an appropriate amount of Grace and Love to our words, so that it is more pleasant to the hearer.
Too often we speak our minds without any ‘seasoning’! Especially on social media – the permission to rant is assumed! Of course, we have political correctness to temper our rants… but this is the world’s way, not God’s way.
There are those who feel free to ‘speak their minds’ to others, even in the church, without seasoning, the ‘cold hard truth’ they often call it. “I’m just blunt, that’s how God made me! And besides it’s the truth!” Is how some explain this behavior!
God’s way is to be gracious. He is gracious and kind with His people and gives us this guidance that we too can be gracious with each other.
The ‘salt of gracious speech’ gives respect to the other person, their opinions and actions. This is speaking with compassion, understanding, and Love not with judgement, condemnation, or anger. It is identifying with their struggle rather than accusing.
Our words have tremendous impact on others. “Let your speech always!… be gracious!” Seasoned with the salt of Grace and Love.
Father, help us remember that we are all sinners saved by Your Grace alone. Let our words always express Your Love to others.
