Today’s Encouragement is Romans 1:5 NLT “Through Christ, God has given us the privilege and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey him, bringing glory to his name.”
Believe and Obey –
Paul begins and ends the book of Romans with this same phrase… ‘believe and obey’ (Rom 16:26).
Now, we are all very familiar with the need to believe- we believe in the Jesus the Christ, Savior of all who believe in Him, who trust Him, who rely upon Him for our cleansing from sin, and right standing with God.
But, about the need to obey… we are sometimes… well, less focused. Is it possible that we could be mistaken in our belief that we do not ‘really’ need to obey God, because Jesus has ‘fulfilled the law’ (Matt 5:17) or because ‘there is no condemnation’ (Rom 8:1) for we who are believers?
The religious leaders of Jesus’ day worked exclusively, religiously on obeying every single detail of the Law. Yet they didn’t even recognize Jesus. They had the obedience down, but there was no faith! We today, might be doing the opposite, focusing exclusively on faith, without much thought of being obedient.
And what are we to Obey? Remember Jesus said, John 13:34 NLT ‘So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.’
Father, help us to Obey this new command from Jesus to love You and love others. Your new commandment is a blessing not a burden. And we cannot love at all, without You enabling us.
