Hope and Encouragement

Today’s Encouragement is Romans 15:4 NLT “Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.”

Hope and Encouragement-

Too often I am guilty of considering the Old Testament as ‘outdated’, or even replaced by the New Testament.  But passages like this clearly show that is a wrong concept.

The only “Scriptures” this New Testament verse can possibly be referring to is the Old Testament!  During the time when each word of the New Testament was written, the only Scripture that existed was the Old Testament! And the OT Scripture gives us hope and encouragement!

So, it was written to teach us.  Maybe it’d be a good idea to learn what the OT has to teach us? We are told in this verse that it will give us Hope and Encouragement, just as the NT does. And this hope and encouragement comes as we wait for God’s promises to be fulfilled.

As we wait… Friends if God’s promises were always fulfilled, if He always did what we asked immediately… there would be no waiting!  Yet time and again in the Bible we are advised to wait patiently for Him.  Because we have Hope and Encouragement from the Scriptures (both OT and NT) we can wait patiently for His promises to be fulfilled… Because His Promises Never Fail!
