Today’s Encouragement is Matthew 13:22 (ESV) As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.
Choke the Word –
The cares of the world and deceitfulness of riches choke the Word! If you’ve done any gardening at all you know that weeds can choke a good plant, cutting off sunlight, absorbing the nutrients in the soil, and sometimes actually wrapping around a good plant to physically choke it, like a python crushes its prey.
Imagine (forgive me for this graphic example but it’s His imagery not mine) putting your hands around the neck of the one bringing you the Word of God and choking Him… Horrifying! But that is what He said that we do… when we allow the cares of life, our worries, our efforts to ‘make it’ financially, to rule our hearts…
Friends, His Word is choked out when we allow worry, cares, pursuit of wealth, or anxiety to dominate our thoughts and hearts, rather than trusting His Word… trusting His Truth, trusting in Him.
Lord, help us turn away from the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, from fear, worry, anxiety and instead to Trust in You, and depend on Your Word – so that Your Word is fruitful in our lives.
