Heaven cannot contain

Today’s Encouragement is 1 Kings 8:27 NLT “But will God really live on earth? Why, even the highest heavens cannot contain you. How much less this Temple I have built!”

Heaven cannot contain –

Solomon built the first and greatest temple for God in Jerusalem around 3000 years ago.  It was magnificent! Everything was covered in gold.  And here Solomon prays, dedicating it to God, and the glory of the Lord filled the Temple (v 10-11).

Yet this wisest man, King Solomon, recognized that, as beautiful, as magnificent, as well-intentioned as this Temple was… nothing on earth, nor even the heavens above, can contain our God.  He is far beyond our ability to understand Him… He is so much greater, my friends, than we give Him credit for!

And here is a mystery.  God is too great for us to understand Him, Isaiah 55:8 NLT “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” And yet… He gave us Jesus, to show us, to reveal to us – Himself! Jesus said, John 10:30 NLT “The Father and I are one.”

Jesus introduced us to the heart of God, to the Love of God for us (John 3:16).  So, while we cannot understand God, whom all the heavens cannot contain, nor know His ways and thoughts, yet we Can know Him – by knowing Jesus! Jesus is God with us, Immanuel, so that can know Him… even though ‘the highest heavens cannot contain’ Him!

Thank You Father for allowing us to see You, to know You, through Jesus. Help us to grasp the mystery: how vast is Your Greatness, and yet how genuine Your Love for, and Your knowledge of, each of us – Your adopted children, sinners saved only by the Grace of Jesus.
